Presentation: Shared Reading for Second Language Learners.
March 31st, 2006 by Fiodhna

The following presentation on ‘Shared Reading for Second Language Learners’ was given at the TESOL Arabia International Conference in the Madinet Jumeriah Hotel, Dubai on the 30th March, 2006 for an audience of up to 400 people. Below is a summary of the presentation:

Summary: It is a rare child that does not enjoy stories! Research has long supported the view that enjoying and participating in stories is a sure way into literacy and learning. However, “the desire to read is not born in a child. It is planted by parents and teachers” (Trelease, 2001). Planting that desire can be born through Shared Reading. This type of reading has been shown to be an important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading (Fisher and Fisher Medvic, 2000). While the daily practice of Shared Reading is on the rise in first language classrooms, there has been limited research on its use by second language teachers of English, especially in an Emirati context (Hyland, 2005). This workshop will present Holdaway’s Natural Learning Classroom Model as a suitable Shared Reading Methodology for second language learners. it proposes seven practical techniques of good Shared Reading practice in a second language environment, that help make the reading experience more fun, interactive, and meaningful. Finally it discusses features of texts, suitable for Shared Reading with young second language learners. Participants received a resource pack full of ideas that will help make Shared Reading lessons more fun!

Here is the pamphlet that was distributed during the presentation.
